Hello Svillanders, we know that most of you use the Troldfolk in your Svilland Campaigns. We also love our sweet Troldfolk. Using them in campaigns would create many unforgettable scenes. We believe that they are one of the purest creatures of Svilland. So, we thought that we should write a new race for Troldfolk.
Here it is! Expanding Svilland: Trold Race.
NEW RACE: TROLD
Your trold character has various abilities. Due to the shifting nature of troldfolk, it may have very different signature traits depending on the subrace you choose.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution scores increase by 2.
Age. Trolde do not mature quickly, they become adults in their late twenties. Those years are also the time which many trolde seek a spouse. On the other hand, they can live up to more than a hundred years. Still, they rarely do so because of the challenges and threats in their life. If a trold lives for more than 40 years, it is usually considered an elder, a wyse trold.
Alignment. Trolde can be of any alignment but they are often chaotic and never lawful. They value their society’s norms and they believe in their instincts. Yet, two trolde can still be quite different from each other. Because of their vicious build, they tend to be quite destructive if they are evil, often having the Chaotic Evil alignment.

Size. Trolde range from 6 to 7 feet tall to more than 12 feet tall depending on their subrace. Your size is Large if you are a wyld trold, and Medium if you are a bortbyting (changeling) trold.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. Trolde are used to deep forests and shadowy caverns. Thus, they see better in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness if it were dim light.
Instincts. You have instincts that are never wrong for you. Three times a day when you fail an Insight check, you can make a reroll.
Languages. You can speak Austris (Common) and Giant. Giant language is rough and comes from the throat. It sounds rude and intimidating to a person who does not speak it. In fact, giant language has a vast repertoire for curses, it is quite fun and creative to curse in Giant.
Subrace. The troldfolk has two subraces, wyld and bortbyting (changeling). Wyld trolde are those who live in the wilderness, and those that are known to be trolde by the Svillanders. Bortbytingen are changelings, they are trolde that are replaced with Svillander babies. Because of their nurture, they look quite Svillander-like and they are often charming and beautiful.
WYLD TROLD
As a wyld trold, you live in the wilderness. You prefer to stay out of contact with Svillanders, as nobody knows what they bring with them when they come. You may be living with your mother if you are a boy, and father if you are a girl. You may be close to your tribe or wandered far to form your own family or place to live. You trust your instincts as your guide when you voyage and face challenges in the wilderness.
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2.
Wyld Wandering. You have proficiency in the Survival skill.
Regeneration. At the start of each one of your turns, you regain 1 hit point. This value increases by 1 when you reach 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th levels. You cannot regain hit points if you take fire damage on your last turn.
Tough Skin. You add 1 to your AC as natural armor.
Bulky. Your hit points maximum increases by 2, and it increases by 2 every time you gain a level.
Fascination. You have disadvantage on your saving throws against being charmed or falling magically asleep.
Trold Weakness. You have vulnerability to fire damage.
BORTBYTING
When you were an infant, you were replaced with a Svillander baby. You may or may not know your true nature, but you were raised by Svillanders as one of their own. In any case, you know you are different than the society you live in. You think differently, perhaps more flexibly or cunningly than others. You are fond of word games, for intents of philosophy or deceit.
Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence and Charisma scores increase by 1.
Tongue Games. You have proficiency in Deception or Persuasion skills.
Resilient Mind. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or falling magically asleep.
Adaptation. You possess one trait of your choosing from the race that raised you. You cannot choose a trait from a subrace.
Extra Language. You can speak, read and write in the society you have been raised.
Cold Iron Vulnerability. Cold iron weapons are effective against fey and other creatures that magically adapt to hide their nature. Although your wyld cousins adapted themselves beyond this weakness, your kind couldn’t. You have vulnerability to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage from weapons that are made of cold iron.
Have a Try!
Here are the troldfolk race and its two options as subraces. Feel free to try it out on your next character for a D&D game. You can wish to try it in a game of a different setting, or in Svilland by obtaining the demo booklet from our website or purchasing the book in PDF format from DrivethruRPG.
Feel free to comment on this article about what do you think of troldfolk as a race. How is its alignment with the Norse mythology? We would appreciate any suggestions and feedback.

Just a thought, the bortbyting entry would read better as “swapped with a Svillander child”, rather than “replaced”.
